Educating Your Patients

Make sure you keep your patients informed about oral health. The BDHF released some interesting facts about oral health in Britain to make people more aware of their oral health.

  1. 74% of all British adults have had a tooth removed

That works out to more than 60 million adults who have lost a tooth, this can be changed with regular visits to the dentist.

  2. 27% only visit their dentist when they have a problem

More than half of us have admitted that we wished we had care for our teeth better and prevention is almost always better than cure.

  3. 50% of Brits are unhappy with their smile

A BDHF survey found discoloured/crooked teeth are the biggest reason we are unhappy with their smile, 1/3 said a good smile is the most important attribute in attractiveness.

  4. 10% would cut oral care items from their shopping to save money

Keeping your smile maintained is relatively cheap with a tube of fluoride toothpaste and a toothbrush, compared to ongoing dental costs and painful treatments later in life.

  5. 1/3 of children are starting school with visible signs of tooth decay

If something is not done this figure will continue to grow.

  6. Healthy’ alternatives are not always what they claim to be

These can be as damaging to teeth as sugary soft drinks. Some fruit juices, while 1 of your 5 a day, can contain more sugar than the same amount of fizzy drink.

  7. Brits do not have the worst teeth globally

Research shows 92% of American adults show signs of tooth decay – 28% in England.

  8. 2/3 believe their teeth affect their prospects at work

Many people feel employers will overlook them for promotion if they have poor oral health.

  9. 14% of people are frightened to visit the dentist

Trips to the dentist ranked top in a poll on what make people nervous, this was more popular than heights and nearly 10 times as many compared to the doctor.

  10. UK tooth whitening market is worth an estimated £40 million

This industry has soared in recent years as more people desire the ‘perfect smile’.

  11. Only qualified professionals can legally whiten teeth

It is illegal for anyone other than a dental professional to perform tooth whitening.

  12. Women smile more than men

In general women actually smile more than men with studies showing this starts from when they are babies.

National Smile Month 2015

NSM Smile Logo BDHF

May 18 – June 18

It’s your time to shine! Promote your practice locally to attract new patients & encourage preventative oral healthcare.

National Smile Month promotes 3 key messages, so make sure your promotions are in line with these:

  1. Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least 1 other occasion with fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.
  3. Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend

The aim is to ultimately improve the UK’s oral health.

Dentists across the country will be trying to educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages in a targeted campaign to improve smiles around the country.

You could run a Direct Mail campaign to lapsed patients, or a new patient examination discount. You could start an e-Newsletter to your patient list to remind them of key dental facts, your latest cosmetic treatments and any practice news.

Organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, the campaign hopes to raise awareness of important health issues.

National Smile Month will see hundreds of events and activities up and down the UK engage local communities about the importance of a healthy mouth, and hopes to make a positive difference to the oral health of millions of people.

The campaign, which takes place May 18 – June 18, encourages all dental and health professionals, schools, pharmacies, community groups, colleges and workplaces – in fact anyone with an  interest in good oral healthcare, to join in.

Marketing with Payment by Results

The most forward thinking marketing companies are now looking at different ways of structuring their pricing, and many are introducing payment by results for a proportion of their fees.

When you think about this, it makes sense. An experienced, skilled marketing agency will be confident in their ability to achieve results – it’s about partnership and sharing success.

Having spent many years working with dentists who often have very little experience with marketing, (and why should they?) it’s not surprising that if your clients are employing a marketing agency for the first time, you need to reassure them – not only with your experience, expertise, success stories and client recommendations – but for some having a proportion of your fees based on results, whether enquiries, new consults, practice income or ‘bottom line’.

Measurement and Transparency

Measurement and transparency are of course essential and both parties need to pre-agree the campaign budget, objectives and targets. Ambitious dental practices looking for continuous support to grow their business are more than happy to share management and financial information. That’s a true partnership. The more we know about the dental practice and the way it is set up and run, the better the outcomes will be from our business development and marketing activities.

To find out more about how this approach is being embraced by more and more dental practices and other businesses in the sector, contact us on 0845 287 3051 and ask for Steve Davey.

Marketing. Making it happen!

Some people want it to happen

Some wish it would happen
Others make it happen

To make it happen, you first need a plan, a roadmap if you like. In the same way you don’t get in your car without knowing where you are going and how you are going to get there, it’s the same for building a business.

A business plan supported by a marketing plan that helps you achieve your business objectives is the way to reach your destination, whether measured in income, profit, cases, professional standing within your profession or exit, if you have an exit plan (which is a huge subject in itself).

For help with a business plan and marketing plan from the people in the know, it’s important to work with a specialist marketing agency that knows your challenges, your industry and the roadblocks potentially in your way.

Make 2015 the year you have a roadmap to growth. Contact Steve on 0845 287 3051 or steve@smiledentalmarketing.co.uk.

Join the Smile Team

To continue its growth path, Smile is looking for talented individuals to join the team as regional associates. The positions we’re are looking to fill are for the Midlands, East Anglia, North East, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. We already have associates covering London/South East, South Coast, South West, Wales and the North West.

Smile offers a full range of marketing services including business planning, branding, marketing planning, welcome packs, referral packs, clinician and practice PRdental websites, patient recruitment campaigns and Social Media Strategy and Social Media Management.

Offering either retainer-based or project-based packages, the company’s flexible approach to helping practices is proving to be very popular.

Steve Davey, commented:

Since the launch of Smile Marketing 5 years ago, interest from dentists, orthodontists, endodontists, implantologists and other specialists has been fantastic. The dental industry has become increasingly competitive so guiding Principals and Practice Managers to become self-sufficient and more targeted with their marketing has proved to be a real ‘win win’.

The introduction of Payment by Results, a proportion of our fees based on practice performance (enquiries, consultations, income), has proved to be very popular and shows our commitment to helping businesses succeed. Dentists want advice and guidance from people who know the industry inside out and understand their issues and that’s where we fit in.

Blue Wednesday at PPD

November is Mouth Cancer Action Month run by The British Dental Health Foundation. The aim of the campaign is to get more mouth cancers diagnosed at an early stage by raising awareness of the risk factors, signs and symptoms, whilst encouraging people to discuss them with their dental professional.

blue

On Wednesday 19th November, Patient Plan Direct will be hosting a ‘Blue Wednesday’ which will involve a ‘dress in blue’ day amongst other activities. In the run up to the day they will be working hard to fund raise and reach their goal of £1,000 before the 19th November.

If they hit the target before the 19th then Simon Reynolds, Commercial Director of PPD, has personally promised to come to work wearing nothing more than some skimpy shorts and full blue body paint – something like this but without the muscles and with a bit more hair…

This is a fun way to support a very worthy cause within dentistry, with the aim to raise awareness of mouth cancer and the risks it represents, a disease which has increased by 50% in the last decade.

If you would like to contribute to Blue Wednesday and Mouth Cancer Awareness then make a donation via our Just Giving page.

Based in Ashburton near Exeter in Devon, the agency has now supported over 60 practices – incl. Orthodontists, Periodontists, Endodontists, Implantologists, Referral Centres, Dental Spas, Labs – and other businesses in the industry since its 2009 launch. Steve commented:

“Support from dentists has been fantastic and this has enabled us to provide a platform for growth which bodes well for the future. In our 5th year, we have entered a period of accelerated growth enabling us to add to the core marketing team in Devon as well as increase our team of consultants and project managers in other parts of the UK.”

“As we have developed the agency, we have forged some very strong relationships with other businesses that also work with dentists. These include Patient Plan Direct, the service-led dental plan company that offers significant cost savings, Albert Goodman, dental accountants with a wealth of experience, Scott Richards Solicitors, whose dental law expertise includes practice purchases and sales, JSP Media, the innovative and creative dental video company and Daneswood, our digital partner agency, who have worked with Smile Marketing on over 25 dental websites to date. Together with our partners, we look forward to supporting even more dental businesses in the years to come.”
